Heartsaver (HSaCPR) CPR AED Course

This Heartsaver Course is valid for 1 year and contains all the skills required at the CPR AED level. The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) recommends that participants renew their Heartsaver Certifications annually.


Target Audience

Anyone can take the Heartsaver course, which was designed for people who need a course completion card in a CPR AED class.


Course Content

The Heartsaver Course is taught at four levels. Topics covered are:

  • Adult CPR AED
  • Adult CPR AED, Child CPR AED
  • Adult CPR AED, Infant CPR
  • Adult CPR AED, Child CPR AED, Infant CPR

Note: All Heartsaver courses include the Relief of Choking training.


Course Duration

  • Approximately 4 hours (level 4)


Prerequisites

  • None required


Certifications Earned

  • Heartsaver CPR AED certification - valid for 1 year from date of completion


Completion Criteria

  • Ability to comprehend and successfully demonstrate the skills and pass a knowledge evaluation with a minimum mark of 75%
  • 100% attendance and participation in the course


What to bring

  • Pen and paper
  • Comfortable clothing (CPR will involve physical activity)
  • Indoor footwear during inclement weather

Heart and Stroke Health Care Provider (CPR-HCP)

This Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider (Level CPR-HCP) program is valid for 1 year from issue and contains all the skills required at the BLS level.


Target Audience

The HSFC (BLS) Health Care Provider Course is designed to prepare health care professionals for performing CPR both inside and outside the hospital setting. Anyone who needs to know how to perform CPR in a health care setting can take this course. Rescuers who want to learn more about performing one or two rescuer CPR for adult, child and infant victims can also take this course.


Course Content

  • 1 rescuer adult, child and infant CPR
  • 2 rescuer adult, child and Infant CPR
  • Adult, child and infant choking
  • Barrier device/pocket mask
  • Bag Valve Mask (BVM)
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Rescue breathing
  • Cardiac arrest


Duration

  • Approximately 4½ hours


Prerequisites

  • None required


Course Description

The BLS for Health Care Provider course contains updated content and science from the 2015 Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiac Care. The skills taught are one and two rescuer adult, child and infant CPR, along with adult, child and infant choking, barrier device/pocket mask, Bag Valve Mask (BVM) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use. A participant CD is included with the text and contains supplemental information on topics such as cardiac arrest and special resuscitation situations.


The course is designed for health care providers such as emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, physicians, dentists, nurses and respiratory therapists who need a credentialed course. This course is also open to first responders who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.

  • Heart and Stroke Health Care Provider (Level CPR-HCP) - valid for 1 year from date of completion.
